Castles and monuments

In addition to museums, South Limburg is home to magnificent castles and historic structures that take you back to times gone by. From imposing estates to centuries-old city gates, the region oozes history and charm.

Château St. Gerlach, located in the picturesque Geul Valley, is an impressive estate with a rich history. This former monastery and noble residence is surrounded by magnificent gardens, vineyards and a beautiful park. Visitors can stroll here, admire the historic buildings and enjoy the serene atmosphere the estate exudes.

In Valkenburg aan de Geul you will find numerous historical gems, including the Grendelpoort. This well-preserved city gate is a tangible reminder of the city's medieval defenses. Together with the remains of Valkenburg Castle, the only high castle in the Netherlands, and the mysterious marl caves, it makes for a fascinating destination for history buffs.

One of the most impressive and moving sites in the region is the American Cemetery in Margraten. This venerable monument commemorates the thousands of American soldiers who gave their lives for the liberation of the Netherlands during World War II. The endless rows of white crosses and Stars of David make a deep impression and provide a moment of reflection. Countless visitors come here every year to reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedom.

In addition to these special locations, there are many other historical sites in South Limburg. From the stately Kasteel Hoensbroek, one of the best preserved castles in the Netherlands, to the old water mills and chapels scattered throughout the rolling landscape. Wherever you go, everywhere you feel history come alive!
